What Are The Most Popular Vehicles To Buy Used?

Posted by CarGurus Admin on March 21, 2016

It’s a simple question: what are the most used popular vehicles on CarGurus nationally? We now have more than 18 million monthly users in the US, so our used-vehicle stats provide a solid picture of the used-car market as a whole.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top five used vehicles on CarGurus.

Vehicle Share of used lead traffic on CarGurus
Ford F-150 2.81%
Jeep Wrangler 2.13%
Honda Accord 2.05%
Ford Mustang 1.8%
BMW 3-Series 1.71%

Meanwhile, here are the top five vehicles in the new-car market:

Vehicle New-vehicle market share (Feb. 2016)
Ford F-150 4.52%
Chevy Silverado 3.21%
Dodge Ram 2.87%
Toyota Camry 2.41%
Toyota Corolla 2.18%

What differences do you notice between the two tables? For one thing, the percentages are smaller on CarGurus than in the new-car marketplace. That’s because there are more models available on CarGurus at any given time – you can even find low-volume specialty cars like the Delorean DMC-12.

What’s also interesting is the presence of a couple sporty cars. The Mustang has only 0.74% of the new-car market, while the 3-Series’ market share is an even more feeble 0.34%. Yet these cars are very popular among used shoppers.2016_honda_accord_touring-pic-360435871111037981-640x480.jpeg

Given that many CarGurus users filter their search results on the basis of price – 50% of our users say they filter on price, with mileage a distant second at 26% – many people appear to be turning to the used market to buy a vehicle they’d struggle to afford new.

Keep this in mind as you fill out your inventory. What vehicles might the typical shopper have an eye on? Which new cars or trucks are a little outside the “average” new-vehicle price (low-$30,000s)?
